“Can’t Buy a Thrill” Unless it’s Steely Dan

Andrew Clark, aka The Brand Chef, from time to time will roll out an occasional “Groove of the Day” on Twitter.  It could be anything since his musical taste is pretty open.

Steely Dan. Then...

I’m particularly picky when it comes to music.  Then again, who isn’t?

As a young adult whose parents grew up with the emergence of Motown in the 60’s, it’s in my DNA to toss a CD in and play the music from the 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s.

Steely Dan is one of my all-time favorite performers.  The duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker cranked out hit after hit during the 70’s and after a long break from the 80’s until 2000, they continue attract new fans that were not born when “Reelin’ in the Years”, “Pretzel Logic”, and “Midnight Cruiser” were being spinning on record players.

Yes, there was such a thing as record players, Millennials.

...and now.

“Peg” is not only their biggest hit, it’s my #1 song.  Ahead of The Four Tops, Temptations, Swing Out Sister, and others.  After the jump, is a mini-documentary on Steely Dan as Becker, Fagen, drummist Rick Marotta, bassist Chuck Rainey, and Michael McDonald explain the long painstaking task of finding the perfect pieces to do “Peg”.  After that is the song, in its entirety.

Enjoy.

  1. You have great taste, R! But can you tell the fans who was Steeley Dan’s drummer before he chose to “Chase” a new career?

Thanks for the hat tip, friend! Good Stuff!
